Oliver Goldsmith Eyewear started nearly 100 years ago and are
still going today. Perhaps their peak period was around the time
this pair were made, when movie stars and Royals were wearing
OG designs. Chas says it was made in France, no doubt by Paris
Frames who they collaborated with at the time. It is rumoured
that this design inspired by
Ray Charles' choice of eyewear, 'Chas'
being a common shortening of Charles in England and perhaps
why Chas has been given inverted commas. OG have over the past
20 years or so been delving into their own archive and remaking
many of their original designs -
here is another OG site (yes, it's
a bit confusing) - but neither has remade Chas. Which is remarkable
as it is a great design, with the sweeping sides to conceal the pins
and offering a clean front: terribly modern in the late 60s to hide
those fusty old pins. Beautiful, blonde acetate - looks hardly worn
since it was hand-crafted 60 years ago. Perhaps it should be in the
Victoria & Albert Museum where there is a permanent Oliver
Goldsmith exhibition.
