info
The
Balrim B-51 dates from the early-1950's and was marketed
as semi-casual eyewear as you can see
from this promotion in
their 1957 catalogue. It was a hugely popular shape - their top
selling frame for a number of years - which is why we find them
from time to time. And the fact that temple options aside, at the
time of the above catalogue, it came in 16 sizes in 7 colours: 112
different options. Compare that to today's frame makers who at
best offer two eye sizes and one or two bridge sizes. Such was
the size of Bausch & Lomb in the mid-1950s. This pair dates
from the late 1950's when the shields on the front were made
bigger and bolder and this type continued into the early 60's.
The colour of our frame is the not listed in the above catalogue
as it was introduced later: Black Briar & White, which is sort of
a striped grey, the 'white' referring to the metal chassis being
white gold. The frame is never having been worn, we found it
with an original typed sales sticker on the inside.
