other info
  • We have found Executive as one of the new trade names

registered by Hame Optical (London) in the British Optical

Directory for 1968. And this frame does look to date from

1968. During this year Hame were making frames in Rocel and

in 1969, released a frame called Buccaneer. So Executive

may be a design by Hame and it may be in Rocel - this was a

cellulose acetate from the British company Courtaulds, who

encouraged makers to use their material with an annual

international design award. We don't know if Executive was

pitching for that accolade but it certainly is exceptional and

one that revels in the acetate used: a 7mm thick acetate in

a rich, imitation turtleshell, measuring 140mm across a pinless

front. There are very small plaques on the wide sides, but they

are almost also used to set off the shaping of the arms which

have been bevelled or carved back in an arrow-shape detail.

This is a heavy but sculpted frame and wraps around the head,

with hand-incised temple tips to help. It came to us hardly

worn but has still been restored to international competition -

    or local boardroom - perfection.
