  • The 'Jaguar' actually came out earlier in the Fifties, however we

can date this pair from 1959 as this was the year that American

Optical launched the "...new, bold, masculine.." R59 library-type

temple as an option for just two of their men's frames: Modern

    Times
and Jaguar. See too AO's 1959 catalogue cover using the

Jaguar's distinctive silhouette. Magazines like Esquire in 1960

described the design as "..virile.." and with smart, wide, straight

arms that made the "..Chairman of the Board.." type frame easy

to slip on and off. AO themselves called it, "...the new forward

    looking style, boldly continental..."
    seems the market for Jaguar

was the high-flying executive who might be jetting between the

States and Europe. The colour of their superb zyl in this example

is Onyx - but note that this inky black opaque layer sits on top of a

clear one, so that the face of the frame appears to float. Supported

by the machine-sculptured bridge, accented with silver double-

feathered arrow-flight plaques, this is a substantial but ultimately

stylish frame for those power-panthers of the boardroom and the

confident players in today's game. Jaguar is now one of the most

collectible and rare men's zylonite spectacle frames of the 1950's.
