Shuron are still going today - since 1865! - but it appears
that these days they merely exist to remake their old designs from
their heyday. There are about 20 or so frames on their website but
none look like new designs. And of course they can't be as good
as the originals as they are no longer gold-fill frames, rather they
are plated. The best aspect of gold-fill frames was - as we've said
many times on these pages - was that they kept their appearance
and never corroded. So you can buy a copy of the original Ronsir
but don't waste your time looking for a remake of this frame as
they haven't done one. This frame looks to have been made just
before the US enetered the war and probably continued into the
1950s. The straight top bar designated it as a man's frame and
indeed, it is a good size: 44 eyesize for this shape was likely the
largest it came in back then as eyeglasses framed the eyes rather
than the face. Besides the gold-fill mark, it is stamped, FUL-VUE
which refers to the raising of the temples which happened
around the early 30s, referring to an unobscured view of the eyes
from the side this new style offered. The frame is hand-engraved
around the rims and across the top. A rare and beautiful frame
in showroom condition.
