info
Bausch & Lomb was started in the mid-19th century by two
German immigrants to the USA, JJ Bausch and Henry Lomb.
Due to their ingenuity and resorcefullness they grew the
company in Rochester NY from an arcade shop in 1853 to by
the turn of the century a plant of over 1000 sq ft, offices in
Chicago and New York and over 1000 employees. Of course
they are today most well known for starting Ray-Ban sunglasses,
but before that they made high quality optical frames like this one.
We know it is dated 1928 as it is described in Richard Corson's
excellent,
Fashions In Eyeglasses (1967) - depiction b on
Plate 59.
A gold-fill frame expertly engraved around each rim with a crested
bridge. Top of the range no doubt from that year, it would have
been the province of only the wealthy. The gold-fill has meant
that it has survived in excellent condition but we don't think was
worn that much as the original nose-pads remain pristine.
