  • This gold filled frame from the 1920's is a transatlantic

traveller and an example of how American craftsmanship

was appreciated in England: the London office for the

DuPaul-Young Optical Company of Southbridge Mass. was

in the heart of the capital's jewellery, watch and optical

quarter. DuPaul-Young was established in the US in 1887

by makers DuPaul, Young and Caron and made steel and

gold-filled spectacles - see the 'DYO' stamped under the

bridge. The British Optical Museum have a photo of one

of their 'English' catalogues from 1920 with their motto:

"Quality and Finish". English gentlemen must have paid

quite a price for these imported frames, but they invested

in a classic: perfect round, gold-filled spectacles like these

are the epitome of elegance in eyewear. DuPaul-Young

Opticalcontinued until just 1951. There are probably very

few eyewear companies that could put 'Southbridge and

London' after their name. This pair really is a piece of

    US-UK history.
