info
You may know Ultra from their Goliath and Goliath II frames,
having been made famous by
Run DMC's Darryl McDaniels,
thereby giving them legendary status. We're guessing Sudan
not as well known, unless it was worn by Mrs. McDaniels and
we haven't heard about it. Ultra were a brand by Americans,
Palm Optical, who specialised in the importation and distribution
of European frames. It was Palm who discovered Cazal Eyewear,
from Germany, and first brought their designs to the USA in
the late 1970's. At the same time they introduced their own line
of luxury eyewear - the Ultra Collection - and the Goliaths and
Sudan are from that range, these made in an optical factory here
in England. The out-there European style of Cazals and Ultras
set them apart from more timid American options, and their
outlandish sizings were matched by hefty price tags; a cult
following thus began, coveting their exclusivity and rarity.
Sudan is ultra-large, so the timid should not apply. Added
to that the rhinestones and stud work and you've got some
serious Hollywood eyewear here. Don't know who is Brandy -
credited on the inside temple as the designer - but what a gal.
