info

Pathway was an optical company started by Joseph Schwarz

in Long Island City, Queens in 1947. This pair looks to be one of

their early ones as it retains a hint of the shape that was popular

in the late 1940s. But as it is marked with the number 117, we're

guessing it is early 1950s. It is constructed from a double layer

of acetate, crystal over black, but with decorative vertical stripes

of silver foil adhered to the black layer, which is constantly

catching the light. The effect is stunning, the photos hardly doing

it justice. Although only a 44 eyesize, the frame is large for the

period, being just shy of 140mm across the top. An amazing piece

of Americana in beautiful condition, ready for you lenses. Sadly,

Pathway closed their doors in the early 90s when a lot of eyewear

manufacture was moving to the far east, indeed we read that their

tool and die equipment from their factory was loaded aboard ships

bound for China.
