Perhaps AO's success when 'Saratoga' was
endorsed by the POTUS
who also competed with the FLOTUS in the sunglasses stakes,
turned them in 1964 to thoughts of couples: so 'Sunfarer' was their
men's design, to the women's 'Sunmate'. AO names at this time were
derived from yachting and boating, and perhaps this too was a nod to
the sailing Kennedy couple. They probably also had an eye on Bausch
& Lomb's 'Wayfarer' - but this design is firmly in the 1960's and very
much inspired by European styling. Modern, bolder and more masculine,
the black acetate emphasises the angular shaping, mitred and notched,
deep at the front and down those dagger arms. Simple, small two-dot
rivets do not detract outside and inside, those AO Red-Dot screw
hinges ensure this substantial design is well-anchored. Lenses are
our new version of the original 'True Color' grey which had seen
a tad too much sunfaring. Man Overboard!
