Perhaps AO's success when 'Saratoga' was
endorsed by the POTUS
who also competed with the FLOTUS in the sunglasses stakes,
turned them in 1964 to thoughts of couples: so 'Sunfarer' was their
men's design, to the women's 'Sunmate'. AO names at this time were
derived from yachting and boating, and perhaps this too was a nod to
the sailing Kennedy couple. They probably also had an eye on the
success of Bausch & Lomb's/Ray-Ban's Wayfarer - hence the similar
nomenclature.
Sunfarer first appeared a few years later as part of their
Sunvogues range - see it
here in their catalogue from 1971. Modern,
bolder and more masculine, the thick acetate emphasises the angular
shaping, mitred and notched, deep at the front and down those dagger
arms. Simple, small two-dot rivets do not detract outside and inside,
those AO Red-Dot screw hinges ensure this substantial design is well-
anchored. Lenses are their 'True Color' grey, ground glass, heat-
tempered. Man Overboard!
