info
Itek, we understand, was started in the 1940s by
some members of ATMoB (Amateur Telescope Makers
of Boston) and the company went on to make spy
satellites in the early 1960s for the US Govt. Then in
1968 they applied at the patent office to use the name
Sunspree for the new range of sunglasses they launched
the following year at trade exhibitions - around the
same time they were fitting the Apollo with one of their
cameras for the 1969 moon mission. So, we're guessing
they knew something about lenses - and you can tell by
looking through these. Indeed, the optical trade gazette
for 1971 says this: "The plano lenses supplied with
Sunspree glasses are optically ground and polished to
ophthalmic precision and thermalized for added impact
resistance." The regulations for impact resistance
didn't come in until 1973 so Itek were already over-
specifying their lenses before they were required to
do so. The shape is a large aviator, pinned through
front and sides and temples are a gererous length with
incised inner tips.
