info
Up there with Ray-Ban as one of the premier sunglasses makers
of the mid-20th century, AO made a range of sunglasses from
the 2nd half of the 1960's they called Sunvogues and the men's
ones all had butch names like Seafarer, Skymaster, Gator - and
later this pair Baymaster. The closest catalogue we have from
that time is 1971 and sadly, Baymaster doesn't yet appear, so
we're thinking by the look of it, that it came out a season or
two later. It has the
AO Tru-Color lenses which they kept going
for decades, these in excellent condition. The frame is a mottled
brown and looks new. A very cool aviator shape but with a filled
bridge, mid-joints, pinned on the sides with 7-barrel charniers.
Can't be many of these left in the world.
NB: a brief note on American Optical. They stopped making
sunglasses decades ago, but continued to make lenses, indeed
when we started our business in 2001 we had an account with
them to buy their glass lenses to replace original AO sunglasses
with genuine AO mineral glass lenses. But that stopped too after
a while. Fast forwrad to 2020 and they were purchased by another
optical company who have decided that vintage companies like
ours were on to something and decided to make some of the
iconic AO sunglasses again. We here haven't handled any so don't
expect a review, but one wonders if they can do the original's justice.
