info

Something for men from the masters Servin - the greatest name in

sunglasses from Spain in the 1960s and 70s. This company was founded

by Don Pedro Robles Vicente and based in Madrid, where they were

thriving by the mid-1960s in a country with a booming economy and

a beautiful climate. Spain also had a growing reputation for high fashion

with designers like Balenciaga, Pertegaz, Castillo and Rabanne in France -

and Vicente's creations may have been exported for sale there too, while

the acetates may have been imported from France. This pair of sunglasses

called 'Munich' was perhaps a dedicated to the 1972 Summer Olympic

Games, where the Spanish royal family were also competitors: Prince (later

King) Juan Carlos, took part in the Games in Munich, West Germany in a

sailing team. It isn't difficult to imagine royalty or any of the Olympic Team

wearing the magnificent sporty design 'Munich'. It is a very wide, wrapped

style with a hollowed out bridge that would suit men or women, however

take note of the measurements as this frame is BIG. The acetate is a swirl of

deep and light greys and the mid-grey tint glass lenses make a great match.

It also means that despite the size, the lenses do not obscure or dominate

the face but this is still a statement 1970s piece. Servin's designs are

the ultimate in Spanish high fashion and quality and workmanship - they

really should be in the new Museum of Costume, appropriately in Madrid,

where Servin were making their name 48 years ago with incredible

eyewear like 'Munich'.
