info
Safilo (since 1934) are now one of the biggest
eyeware companies in the world - making, amongst
others, Boss, Carrera, Moschino, Pierre Cardin, the
list goes on - as well as their own brand, like this pair
made around the late 1940's. We can date it as
women's sunglasses shapes were quite particular
at this short period before designs tended to be
more upswept in the 1950s.
See this American ad
from 1948 and note the 2nd pair down: it has the same
downward angled sides. This style continued for a few
years - into the early 1950s- so this is the period we
put this pair. The frame is a layered acetate, a marbled
grey over a translucent straw colour. The lenses are
glass and a beautiful petrol colour and are the highlight
of this pair, especially offering excellent uv protection,
not a requirement in the middle of the last century.
Indeed, Safilo were so keen on them, they proudly
etched their logo on the inside face of each lens. And
it is a good size, more than 140mm across the front
which brackets it in to extra large for this period.
Outstanding vintage piece.
