  • An incredible 'owl-eye' design from American Optical at

the height of the Swinging Sixties, when the emphasis was

on the eyes. In cosmetics, heavy lashes, dark liner and

deep eyeshadow defined the look and eyewear followed

    - this frame even extending the parameters of the eyes,

like a mask. We can date it to two seasons: 1967-68

and it's the only one we have ever seen. Its rarity makes

it collectable, but it's also an extraordinary example of

American Optical's ability to respond to fashion to bring

couture design and quality to the market. Both the eye-

shape, with lenses higher than they are wide, and the

frame of offset circles that stretch out like wings are

unusual, and the feel is luxury, with glass True-Color sun

lenses surrounded by 6mm deep acetate. "Racy" is in

remarkable condition - it looks never worn. It is ready to

live up to its promise after 49-50 years - or should it stay

pristine, preserved in a museum - that is the dilemma of

    the collector!
