The Sultana was a product of the early 1960's
when the fashion for frames was to wrap the
sides of the frame to leave a clear front - May
themselves described it as, "flowing simplicity
in curve-back styling..." - but it was so popular
that they brought out dozens of variations, many
dressing up the curve back sides with decoration,
rhinestones, carvings and and even adornments.
See what we mean in this 1964 catalogue, showing
SU-23, ours is the same shape, but just a tad
more conservative in a polished white-wood
effect. We found this pair with prescription
sunglasses lenses so we had them changed to
our own Klasik Grey - see above. May was one
of the great eyewear design and manufacture
companies, always innovative and fashion
forward - May pieces are now in museum
collections (as at the MFA, Boston, USA).
