info

Servin, founded by Don Pedro Robles Vicente who also used some

of the best designers, were probably the greatest name in sunglasses

from Spain in the 1960s and 70s. This country with its sunny climate,

endless coastline, growing economy and holiday industry after WW2

nurtured quite a few designer-makers, and Servin were alongside

manufacturers like Indo, Garvi and Barbudo. They were also part of the

'Spanish Miracle' (1959-1974) when the economy boomed - second

only to Japan, and Servin were flourishing by the mid-1960s in Madrid.

The proximity of France and Italy must also have been a part of that

success with their unique European optical heritages - such influence

and influx also probably meant exports. In fashion, Spanish couturiers

like Balenciaga, Castillo, Pertegaz and Rabanne were internationally

renowned. This Servin design is called Cisne (meaning Swan) and is

very similar to Pierre Marly's famous Cocktail (worn by Jackie Kennedy),

but we think it's superior, because it is less of a bug-eye and more a

wrap, in the shape of the arced wings of a swan. The acetate is beautiful

quality and semi-translucent which does not look heavy on the face -

the mid-tint mineral glass lenses also let the eyes show through.

Superlatives only for the construction with 5-charnier joints, pinned front

and sides, and the acetate glowing with smokey tones through amber,

gold, grey, brown and hints of a subtle blue-purple. This is couture level

European eyewear and absolutely inspired. Perhaps it should be back

in Madrid, among the high fashion on display in the National Museum

of Costume
opened in 2004. But then again, perhaps it should enjoy

its time in the sun..someone will fly away with Cisne.
